BEHIND THE GROOVES: a music blog by Jeff Harris

On this day in music history: March 21, 1987 - “Looking For A New Love” by Jody Watley hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 3 weeks, also peaking at #2 for 4 weeks on May 2nd. Written by Andre Cymone and Jody Watley, it is the first single from Watley’s self-titled debut album. “Looking” will be the last song recorded for the album with Cymone having written the music and recorded a demo of the rhythm track. Watley will come up with the song title and lyrics, which are inspired by a recent break up. “Looking For A New Love” will be the first of two R&B chart toppers for her, and will win Watley a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1988.
