BEHIND THE GROOVES: a music blog by Jeff Harris

On this day in music history: February 14, 1987 - “Livin’ On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks. Written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Desmond Child, it is the second number one single for the rock band from Sayreville, NJ. The band will actually record two versions of the song when Bon Jovi isn’t happy with the first version they record. The song will nearly be left off of the album before Sambora convinces Bon Jovi to rework it, adding a new bassline, drum fills and the talk box. Released as the second single from the band’s third album “Slippery When Wet”, “Prayer” will quickly follow “You Give Love A Bad Name” to the top. Entering the Hot 100 at #83 on December 13, 1986, it will climb to the top of the chart nine weeks later. “Livin’ On A Prayer” is certified 2x Platinum (as a digital download) in the US by the RIAA.

This is my song! Way too many sing-alongs start when my siblings hear it. Definitely a classic.
